Gatorade Oliva Packaging: Redefining Lightweight and Sustainable Design

Revolutionizing Packaging with Efficiency and Innovation

From the first breath of Project Oliva, the focus was to create a package that was a leap forward. A package that was redesigned from the ground up in the most efficient manner possible; a package that was as efficient for the Athlete and efficient for the environment as efficient as it was for manufacturing. For inspiration, we focused on architecture, sporting goods, and automotive influences to create a sleek, strong, and aggressive shelf presence.

Pushing the boundaries of conventional hot fill containers is no easy task. PepsiCo, in collaboration with Amcor LATAM, embarked on the development of a new ultra-lightweight container to replace the current Gatorade global container and change the industry standard. The result? The Gatorade Oliva Packaging, a groundbreaking design that showcases unparalleled efficiency and sustainability.

The Gatorade Oliva Packaging stands out with its unique properties. The design utilizes its own light weighting in the structure itself, making it the lightest weight commercialized hot fill container in the world. Weighing in at just 22 grams for the 500ml version, the container remains exceptionally rigid and strong, unlike most ultra-light containers that tend to collapse.

The realization of the Gatorade Oliva Packaging is made possible through cutting-edge technology. The container, exclusive to the Gatorade brand in Latin America, is made from PET plastic and weighs 30% less than its predecessors. This lightweight package not only reduces costs but also contributes to a more eco-friendly production and recycling process.

Designed with the athlete in mind, the Gatorade Oliva Packaging enhances user interaction. The thin plastic walls and body structure feature large oppositional hand grips that allow for faster rehydration when paired with a sport cap. These grips enable consumers to force fluid out of the container at a quicker rate, ensuring quick rehydration on the go.

Project Oliva faced several challenges in its development. PepsiCo and Amcor aimed to create an extreme lightweight container that would minimize the cost differentiation between aseptic fill and hot fill. Through extensive research, including ergonomic studies and FEA analysis, the team successfully optimized the container's gripability and aggressive styling, resulting in a highly competitive package.

The Gatorade Oliva Packaging made its commercial debut in El Salvador in 2014, marking a significant milestone in the industry. Its exceptional design, combined with the strong Gatorade branding, creates a dynamic shelf presence that appeals to customers and boosts the brand's image.

The Gatorade Oliva Packaging has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious A' Design Award in 2015. This recognition highlights the design's outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence.

With its groundbreaking lightweight and sustainable design, the Gatorade Oliva Packaging sets a new standard for the industry. It not only revolutionizes the way we think about packaging but also showcases the power of innovation and efficiency in creating a better future.
